Your feature coach of the week is most definitely a legend Coach Flosh Ngwenya. Being only 1 of 2 coaches to have won the BNL championship 3 times! Known for having great player coach relationships and being able to bring the best out of his players. Flosh is known for being a very technical coach and being able to bring out the right plays at the right time. While being a common face in the basketball world, not only is his CV quite lengthy but his Win/Loss record is fairly impressive too.
I got in touch with Flosh earlier this week to find out more about his coaching career and philosophy:
Current club or coaching spot?
Egoli Magic (2019 BNL Champions)
Who or what motivated you to get serious about coaching?
My motivation was the fact that there was (and still is) a shortage of good coaches in South Africa.
Have you modelled your coaching philosophies after another coach or has it been “self taught”?
80% self taught and 20% from my past playing experience.
I was once coached by a former NBA and Michigan State legend Sam Vincent in the SA Senior team. His coaching style was more of a “players coach”. He adapted more to the players which created an easy environment for everyone involved to work and improve.
In a nutshell I am a “players coach”, I have a dialog with my players. It’s not a top down approach but a consultative systematic approach. And in terms of developing a philosophy, I look at what I have as a coach and work with that, so consulting with players and having their buy in is key.
A favourite coaching moment?
Being able to sit with Gregg Poppovich and talk basketball.
Highest level coached?
Senior Mens national team for 8 years.
Biggest accomplishment as a coach?
Obtaining my level 2 FIBA Coaching license, obtaining my coaching diploma from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary and being 1 of 2 coaches to have won the BNL Championship 3 times.
